    Converting mkv to avi

    Hi there,

I have been given a couple of DVD R+ DL disks with a single mkv file on each. My desktop will play them with VLC, but my DVD player will not, probably because it does not like the DL / colour of the disk (which is dark mauve.)

I would like to put this films onto a regular DVD R+ (4.7gb) but don't know the best way to do so.

From my reading, converting from an 8.5gb mkv to avi will give at least an 8.5gb avi file, which is too large to burn to DVD.

What is my best way forward?

    Many thanks,

    Rex

As far as splitting AVI is concerned, here are the Google references

    Thanks for the links.

Just tried VirtualDubMod but receive a message regarding Corona.dll.

I just hate it when a new program requires lots of other c**p that does not come as part of the install.

I'll play around a try to figure something out.

Thanks. Seem to have made it work. Think the problem was that I was double clicking on the *.exe file from within the zipped file. When I extracted the zip to a folder, the *.exe worked fine with no corona.dll issue.

The new issue is that VritualDubMod starts with parsing the file ' 0 of 2665875m' message. But it goes on to about 4085764m and then tells me that are so many errors that frankly, it's not worth the hassel for a film!

If the original is not done right, you are right, it is not worth the hassle.
Seen quite a few I messed with that stuff.

    1) Copy to a folder on your HDD.

    2) Use Super to convert the file(s) to DVD compliant VOB format.

    3) Burn to DVD+R using whatever burning program you like.

    Stupid question? No such thing!

    Ridgerunr,

Ace. Worked almost like a champion.

Certainly did a much better job than anything else I have tried. The 'but' is that the movie is Korean. The mkv has subtitles and dubing. Super has just given me the dubbed version, but the dubbing is about five seconds before the characters speak.

Any knowledge as to how to get the two synchronized?

An mkv file is a container format, that wraps around, video, audio and subtitles files.

For example a japanese manga movie mkv, might have the video file (which may be an mpg file, mp4 file etc), 3 audio files (original japanese, dubbed english, dubbed french) and 3 subtitle files, japanese, english and french.

Its possible super is getting confused or has the wrong settings.

You could try the programs MKVEXtractGUI and MKVE Wizard (and mkvtoolnix) to open and extract the files from the mkv file and then if successful use whatever dvd authoring program you have to convert the video, whichever audio file you want and the subtitle file if needed to a normal video dvd.

Its pretty old software though, so not sure if it could handle a file as large as 8.5gb

There is no such thing as overkill. 'Open fire' and 'is it dead?' are the only sane options when threatened.

Super has done a great job, although I have yet to do the complete 8.5gb. A bit of playing around, and I found that I get the quality I want and a dubbed voice over. I would prefer to have the sub-titles. Any suggestions?

Will open the mkv and see if I can pull out the subtitle file and then use something else to imbed it into an avi.

When converting from mkv to vob. I presume that Super just makes one 8.5gb vob file, which presumably, DVD Shrink will reduce to fit onto a 4.7gb DVD?

One way or another, a combination of the above programs has produced some good results, but not quite what I would like.

With Super, I can turn a 7.5gb mkv into a 4.3gb VOB file. With MKV Merge GUI, I can get a 6.5gb AVI file.

The original film is Korean. The mkv contains English dubbing and subtitle files. What I would like is a VOB with subtitles to be able to fit onto a 4.7gb DVD.. What I am getting is a VOB dubbed or an AVI with subtitles. I have run the AVI with subtitles via Super to get a VOB, but the subtitles do not come.

My question. Using Super, is there a way to embed subtitles into a foreign language film?

Thanks for the link. May give it a try but that is only a 'may.' I rarely have the problem that started the thread, so it is more of an annoyance than needing a sloution.
