No Sound and Slow Motion in Multimedia

My wife's PC no longer has sound and videos play in slow motion.
The problem suddenly started about three months ago.

    I have checked:
    All Cable Connections OK
    Speakers Switched On
    Device Manager – No Problems
    Ad-Aware sweep – Clear
Tasks – All unnecessary ones stopped/disabled

    Clues:
    BBC iPlayer Downloaded

    Specification:
    Vista Home
    BitDefender Internet Security Suite
    Media Players:
    WMP
    VLC

    Help would be appreciated

    1. Does it have no sound only on video playback or no sound...period?

    2. Have you tried a different video player (ie. Windows Media Player)?

    3. Is this onboard sound or are you using a sound card? If the former, give us the make/model of your motherboard (or at least the make/model of the computer). If the latter, need make/model of the sound card. What kind of speakers and how old are they?

    4. Same for video: onboard or using a video card?
