index.dat
Hi;
My son installed a program called ItemEdit.Version 2.0 for his Diablo game,now the index.dat file icon is a picture of the Bull.In properties,Type:reads...Diablo Hack Data File. I will remove this ItemEdit and do a restore but would like to know why the index.dat file has changed.Thanks.

Many different programs can use dat files.. that Itemedit obviously does as well.. now dat files on that PC are associated with that program so they show the icon that it was assigned when you do a file search. It isn't a problem really, when ever any other prog needs to access its own dat file it will continue to do so regardless of what icon it has... but you can change it back to windows default if you wish by removing the itemedit dat association in windows explorer>view>folder options>file types.

I had the admonitor latched on instead of index.dat and booted to msdos and just deleted it. Some programs are just weird this way. Always keeps one guessing. Good luck.

Hi there Marina,
I don't think you can actually delete the index.dat file as it is used by Windows at startup.
However, you could use a little proggie like SPIDER to clean out the dat file of hidden URL's, etc...Spider is a great little proggy and very easy to use. It's much safer than actually going into DOS and deleting the contents of the index.dat file!
I hope this helps

Thanks Mosaic,worked like a gem. I had cleaned out the temp files from DOS a few weeks back,still took a half an hour to empty them this time.The index.dat file is now back to 16.kb Might be my imagination but it seems that this machine has sprouted wings.Thanks for the link Goldust will check it out. I think I would like to learn more about DOS though. Have a good weekend.

Marina:
Two things you can do.
1. Make your browser cache smaller. If your deltree really took 30 minutes, you must have a very large cache. (50-100MB?) You will see many recommendations, but the size will depend to some extent on your surfing habits. Mine is set to 3MB and works fine.
2. When you restart to DOS to do the Deltree, enter
smartdrv
first. This will speed up the delete process.
