Resolved [RESOLVED] Setting Up Outlook Express for GMAIL

I am setting up my gmail account in Outlook Express. There are excellent instructions at

    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...y?answer=77659

However when I get to the page where I am supposed to set

"My Incoming Server is a IMAP server"

all I have is POP3. The instructions talk about selecting IMAP from a pulldown menu. I don't appear to have a pulldown menu and cannot type or change POP3.

    thanks for your help

I managed to set the account up as an IMAP. I must have missed a menu step but I cannot get the account to connect. Not sure what I have missed as I have several other e-mail identities which all work perfectly.

OK maybe I spoke to early. I can download but don't seem to be able to send any mail from my Outlook Express account. Is there a special setup for this? I followed the web instructions

    This was my error message

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was '[email protected]'. Subject 'test', Account: 'imap.gmail.com', Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. a30sm5644113rnb.10', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Gmail requires SSL to be active, uses SMTP port 465, and I believe it needs to be sent through smtp.googlemail.com.

I'm wondering why you had to use IMAP because I set mine up using POP3, and it works fine that way. Though I had to change the port numbers as suggested by Doc.

I tried smtp.googlemail.com but still no go.

When I try and send e-mail it just sits there until the server times out. It doesn't reject it, it just does nothing

A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: '[email protected]', Server: 'smtp.googlemail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

I set up an account with POP3 and once again it downloads perfectly but will not upload (send) a message. I get a server timeout message. Is it the fault of my ISP?

    thanks Mark

My goodness I must be getting old. My fault, I wasn't turning on SSL for the outgoing server in the Advanced Tab. I had it turned on for the incoming. Now the POP is working and the IMAP sends also but with some warning. What is the difference between POP and IMAP?

    Thanks for all the help.

You're welcome. Good to hear you got it working. Thanks for posting back.

As far as the differences between IMAP and POP3, see these two pages:
