A Web Site to Call Your Own

A Web Site to Call Your Own http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/02/te...in&oref=slogin

So how do you get an actual domain name like CaseyCorp.com? You have to pay a registrar company around $10 a year for it. You might then pay another company a few bucks a month to “host” your Web site, and somebody else to design the Web pages themselves. For nontechnical people, it’s all an expensive headache. No wonder half of all small businesses don’t even have Web sites.

But starting Nov. 15, somebody will offer to pick up the entire bill. You’ll be able to pick any dot-com (or .net, or .org) Web address that hasn’t already been taken — no charge. You’ll get to design a Web site, complete with links, graphics, search boxes, tables, forms and navigation bars, and hang it on the Web for all to see — no charge. You’ll even get crystal-clear traffic reports whenever you want them, showing how many people are beating a path to your door — and still no charge.

So who’s your mysterious benefactor? A little outfit called Microsoft.

O.K. so where do I sign up

I just began my own business in June. Where do I sign up and are you sure that we won't be charged ocne the beta period is over?

I really need a personal small business site. I have a business site with the company I formed my business with, but a personal biz site would be great and right now I cannot afford to buy a domain.

    I need more info.

    Thanks

    Office Live

Q: Why is Microsoft Office Live Basics free?

A: Office Live Basics is offered at no charge through an advertising-supported model. Microsoft is allowing a select number of advertisers to place small, unobtrusive ads on a handful of member pages. Please know that our advertisers' content will not appear on the Web site you create for your own company.

By the way, it appears that this is only for US users/customers although I haven't read it anywhere. You cannot change countries in the sign up process.

    Couple of questions:

I signed up and I am working on my site. Now can I just quit and go back and work more later?

Should I get an email from them so that I have a place to go back and find my link?

Why did I have to turn on INTRANET, or did I? It seemed I had to. Now when I am done how do I turn INTRANET off?

Having a problem uploading photos. I try to upload to the gallery and my Google pop-up blocker is preventing me from doing so. I cannot click "allow pop-ups" because from the site builder page my Google toolbar is not visible.
    Help? anyone

I'd be interested to know how easy it is to build the web site without any prior knowledge of building a site. Does it look professional or amateurish?

You know, basically it uses templates, then you can change the color, text, and in accordance to what business you own, it gives you a lot of choices to choose from. You can add logo, photos, really anything you want.

I think it may be a cross between amateur and professional by the time I get done. When I finish mine I will post the link or PM it to you if I am not allowed to post it in a post.

It is going to look pretty good for what I want it for. I began my own home business in June. I have a company website but I wanted a generic personal business site for my local area.

It is really too early to know how it is going to turn out, as I just began on the home page and my photo uploader is not working as per my post above.

I need someone to go up there and see if they can answer my questions about intranet and so on.

Can you use your own templates? I have a downloaded CSS template and I can't figure out how to import it into my webspace.
This thing has more bugs than a big city flop house.

The Beta period ended the 15th if I am correct. I think you had to have your domain by then even if you did not finish your site by the 15th.

I completed one, and am working on my second one. Since we have a home business, I used my hotmail account to set up one and my hubbys to set up the second one.

I am still working on the second one.

It turned out really nice for what you had to work with.

If you have more questions just ask me.
