laptop hard drive
Is there any type of adaptor that I can use to attatch a 40pin eide 3.5 inch hard drive to the 44 pin ata-6 hard drive connector on a laptop.

There are plenty of 2.5" to 3.5" adapters available:

But I doubt you'll find anything that will allow you to connect a 3.5" drive directly to a laptop computer, as it won't physically fit.

I forgot to mention that it is not a laptop that I am looking to connect the 3.5 inch hard drive to it is in fact a Vantec AVOX Portable Audio/Video Player and this product just happens to take a laptop hard drive.
The reason why i would like to attach a 3.5 inch hard drive to this device is more capacity for less money.
I am also aware of the fact that the laptop hard drive interface only supplys 5 volts and not 12 volts
I can always improvise some type of power supply to give the hard drive the 12 volt power source it requires.
