Corrupted file
I missed that flash up that tells me to post lots of information about my system. I use Windows 98SE. What else is needed?
I tried to defrag my drive C today but I got a message that it can't be done as C has an error that must be repaired. It said to click help and follow the instructions. Help said to run ScanDisk. When I tried to run ScanDisk I couldn't it said "Windows or another program has been writing to this drive"??
I ran Spybot and it said there was a registry change HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows (I don't know what that is???)
I ran System File Checker and it said the following file may be corrupted; navex15.vxd located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\BinHub
When I tried to restore this I couldn't. Maybe I'm not restoring it from the right place? Would I restore it from my Windows or Norton CD or am I on the wrong track? Very confused.

To avoid the SCANDISK "Windows or another program has been writing to this drive" error message, run SCANDISK in Safe mode.
To start Windows 98 in Safe mode:- Restart the computer.
- As the computer restarts, press and hold down the [F8] key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears.
- When the Windows 98 Startup Menu appears, select Safe Mode and press Enter.
Windows starts in Safe mode. (This can take several minutes.) If you can't seem to get into Safe mode with the [F8] key, try the instructions on the following page:

Corrupted file
Thanks for the suggestion but wouldn't I still have the problem with the corrupted navex15.vxd file?

Run scandisk in safe mode as suggested.If you notice any problems with your Norton software after rebooting to normal mode try a reinstall of the product and select the repair option.

Thanks. I ran Scandisk in safe mode and it worked. I reinstalled NAV. When I run Scandisk in Windows it works now so presumably defrag will also. I ran System File Checker and it says I still have a corrupt navex15.vxd. I'll wait and see if it is a problem.

dollard--this is the usual way to repair a corrupted Windows file in Win98.

However, navex15.vxd is not a Windows file. It is part of Norton AntiVirus. There are several "sources" for another copy, but I have no experience with them, for example

I think it best to get it from Norton, perhaps through Live Update. Alternatively, reinstall NAV or get the latest version of NAV.

Corrupted file
Thanks Welshjim. I did download navex15.vxd from a site like that to my C drive but when I run System File Checker it is still corrupt. I wonder if I downloaded it to the wrong place or what. I reinstalled NAV-it is a recent version.

1) Did you try the procedure in http://users.erols.com/dj-paulen/ss/ ? (I am still a little mystified why SFC is reporting about navex15.vdx, since I do not believe it is a Windows system file, but you have nothing to lose by trying that procedure.)
2) Regret I cannot advise where this file should go. It is not part of any Norton product I now have installed. And I do not use Windows98.
Most Windows system files in Win98 should be put in C:\Windows\System. But as mentioned, I do not know where a NAV file would go.
