is this the right way-- came from google-- about.com
In Windows Vista, you should do the following to close any running programs that you don't want to interfere with a new software install.
This is best completed after a fresh restart/power-on of your system.
Click the start button and in the small search box type "MSCONFIG" without the brackets.
[It may ask for administrator permission - if so authorize this item to run]
This is the system configuration utility. It is much better to use this as it would be a lower level then "End-it-all" etc. and it will be one less item resident in your memory.
Select the tab that say's "START UP" ---> now click the button in the bottom left that says "DISABLE ALL"
Now click "OK" and it will ask you to restart [MAY Ask for Admin permissions again - Authorize if need be]. If for any reason it does not ask you to restart your system, just do so by using the power down options, and selecting restart.
Once your system restarts, you will be running with essential system elements and services, there is no need to shut anything else down!
---> After the restart a system configuration utility dialogue box will appear, check the box in the bottom left corner that indicates "DO not show.... etc." then click "OK".
Now you may install all your software, reboot/restart as necessary and when you have completed all your installations you will do the following to return your system back to normal operational standards:
Click the start button and in the small search box type "MSCONFIG" without the brackets.
[It may ask for administrator permission - if so authorize this item to run]
Select the tab that say's "START UP" ---> now click the button in the bottom left that says "ENABLE ALL"
Now click "OK" and it will ask you to restart [MAY Ask for Admin permissions again - Authorize if need be]. If for any reason it does not ask you to restart your system, just do so by using the power down options, and selecting restart.
Your system is back to normal.
