    Chronically slow/unresponsive/"hung up" computer

I have had ongoing problems with my Dell XPS 400 I purchased in Oct. 2005. I am using Explorer 7 with Windows XP. My yahoo homepage never opens with current headlines - I have to hit the refresh button upon loading; I seldom get a webpage to close normally (use ctrl alt delete or get frustrated to hit the red X and "end program" because the machine is unresponsive). All of my Norton scans (of course) come out clean. Pages load EXTREMELY slow, photos in gmail sometimes don't show up at all or some will/some won't. My computer seems to make "working" type noises at random times even when it's not being used (by me anyway). Please, Please, Please help! I am about to order a laptop and try and melt this thing in the firepit.... Below are the responses to the posted instructions....I could not for the life of me (or this machine) get the GMER scan to run - it kept stopping and hanging up the computer.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    2. Close any open browsers.
    3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
      • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
      • Close any open browsers.
      • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Combo fix log (A)

First of all - THANK YOU!

While running combofix, three diff errors came up: PEV.exe corrupt file (twice) - both c:\documents and settings\all users\applicationdata...one was \purenetworks\platform\networkllib.xml and the other was then \supportsoft\dellsupportcenter\system\data\BITD19.tmp ....both followed by is corrupt and unreadable, please run the chkdsk utility (no idea what this even is). Also got a grey box with Registry Error cannot export Regruns00 on it.

Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders.
Upload following files to http://www.virustotal.com/ for security check:
    c:\windows\system32\ctfmon.exe
If the file is listed as already analyzed, click on Reanalyze button.
    Post scan results.

    Virustotal take two

I ran this again when I saw the info at the top (after I copied and pasted)indicating the scan was stopped, etc., as it said finished the first time I ran it and before I copied.....same thing happened. The scan DID finish completely - not sure where the wording at the top is coming from as it's not on the screen, but....

    Looks good

How is the computer doing at the moment?

    Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start>"Start search"]
    Type in:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall"
Click OK (Vista users - press Enter).
    Restart computer.

    =================================================================

    1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

    2. Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

    1. Disable your active antivirus program.
    2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    4. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    5. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases

    6. Click on My Computer under Scan.
    7. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    8. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    9. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

Post fresh HijackThis log as well.

    Update

When restarting after removal of the combofix program, I again received the grey error boxes of 1) sprtcmd.exe - prompts me eventually to end the program (this occurred every time I was trying to shut down before, however during our cleanup process stopped, so I thought it was gone)....the 2) is ccsvcHst.exe box which flashes relatively briefly and then goes away. Again - these have been a problem every time I shut down or restart, however were gone while going through the other steps - was surprised to see them back. If I was not here to click "end program" for the sprtcmd.exe box, the computer would just sit that way for hours. I will continue with the other steps and post results accordingly unless I hear differently from you....thank you again SO MUCH for all of your patience and help! It is very much appreciated!!!!

First file is a part of Dell Support Center. It's known for causing problems. Your best option is to uninstall it altogether. You don't need it anyway.

Second file comes from Norton. Don't do anything yet about Norton until we're done with cleaning. You can uninstall Dell Support Center anytime. The sooner, the better.

    Hijack this, etc.

I uninstalled combofix and ran TFC without any problems. I get an error (something with #1306 in it) when I try to uninstall the Dell Support thing and it says another application or something is using it. Not sure what that is about?

I cannot for the life of me get the Kaspersky scan to work. It keeps stalling and I've tried six times. I'm on the 6th time and it now died 36 minutes in, having scanned 5% (6418 objects). My antivirus is disabled and I'm pretty frustrated - I have no idea what's causing this. It just stops....it's been this way this time for about 15 minutes.
