[RESOLVED] USB Disconnect Problem. Need Advice...

Running WinXP... I have a couple of Scandisk thumb drives : one 4gig. & 1 16gig. They both use the U3 Launch technology. The problem is that 9 out of 10 times, they will not disconnect appropriately. I have to either shut down the PC or just unplug them. I have searched the web for clues but can't seem to find a solution for the problem. Any suggestions ? Thanks....

BTW, the forum no longer remembers my ID & PW.. I have to reenter them each time I access the forum....

With the drive(s) plugged in - look in the properties for the 2 options. See if option for quick removal is selected.

Having something like Windows Explorer open can cause your issue.

I unchecked that option to no avail. Still will not disconnect. Any other options? The LED on the drive lightly blinks occasionally, but does not flash like being active..

Which one did you UNselect?
In theory - you "want" to select the one for Quick Removal.

Next question:
If you boot up with a drive in (and do nothing else on the pc) - can you do the safely remove?

Clear your cookies, or at least the one for VDr. That'll fix things.

You can uninstall the u3 software on the thumb drives if you don't like the software. Its a one time deal and can never be reinstalled.

I always uninstall the software because i never used it.

The u3 software can be a tricky software that can only run as admin (on some machines) and just generaly a pain.

Steve; I unchecked the "quick Removal" as it was checked beforehand. I booted up with the 16gig installed & had the same problem. However, I installed the 4gig but did nothing & it ejected ok. But then I installed it again & opened a file, then closed it & tried to eject with no luck.
Now regarding the U3, I only used it for security, in the event I was to loose it someplace. With U3, a password is required to launch it. If I were to delete the U3, I would not be PW protected, would I ??
And SuperSparks, My logon has been ok for the past 2 apps. Thanks for the input....

I will not claim to be an expert on USB drives, but you can still encrpty them. That would require to use a password. You do NEED the U3 software for that. But without searching for the info i would not know how to do that.

In-fact, im not even sure the U3 software is the issues. Just wanted to let you know that there was an option to remove the software.

We'll call this case resolved. I took tesdalld advice & removed the U3 & now they disconnect perfectly. As for the security part, I'll work on that issue in some point of time. Thanks to all who replied.....

well glad i could be of some use.

There are some free programs that you could use, Truecrypt (which i have used) and you can use something like Cryptaine LE (which i have not used) to encrypt your files.

Obviously its not as easy as the U3 software.

Not only does it appear that the file "USB_Disk_Eject.rar" contain a Virus, but "MediaFire.com" then tried to open a site with a Red WOT Warning:

It is a virus according to the online multiscan I did of it. I've disabled the URL's in this thread.
