Question closing all applications to install software?

i installed roxio emc 10 "still have nero" on system also, roxio says eliminate nero/
today the system just kept freezing on disc copy restarted to many times, i finally uninstalled roxio, but i got 60.00 in it never used.

they say to close all applications

is this the right way-- came from google-- about.com

In Windows Vista, you should do the following to close any running programs that you don't want to interfere with a new software install.

This is best completed after a fresh restart/power-on of your system.

Click the start button and in the small search box type "MSCONFIG" without the brackets.

[It may ask for administrator permission - if so authorize this item to run]

This is the system configuration utility. It is much better to use this as it would be a lower level then "End-it-all" etc. and it will be one less item resident in your memory.

Select the tab that say's "START UP" ---> now click the button in the bottom left that says "DISABLE ALL"

Now click "OK" and it will ask you to restart [MAY Ask for Admin permissions again - Authorize if need be]. If for any reason it does not ask you to restart your system, just do so by using the power down options, and selecting restart.

Once your system restarts, you will be running with essential system elements and services, there is no need to shut anything else down!

---> After the restart a system configuration utility dialogue box will appear, check the box in the bottom left corner that indicates "DO not show.... etc." then click "OK".

Now you may install all your software, reboot/restart as necessary and when you have completed all your installations you will do the following to return your system back to normal operational standards:

Click the start button and in the small search box type "MSCONFIG" without the brackets.

[It may ask for administrator permission - if so authorize this item to run]

Select the tab that say's "START UP" ---> now click the button in the bottom left that says "ENABLE ALL"

Now click "OK" and it will ask you to restart [MAY Ask for Admin permissions again - Authorize if need be]. If for any reason it does not ask you to restart your system, just do so by using the power down options, and selecting restart.

Your system is back to normal.

    ???????????

    thanks

Anything that needs that kind of pampered attention to install would never see the light of day on a PC of mine!!!

As for why Roxio and Nero can't co-exist... My initial thoughts they could get along together. But since they don't, my guess is something related to packet writing. Roxio saw that Nero was already running IN-CD and could not also run Direct2Disc from Roxio. (Packet Writing is garbage, BTW! IMO!!!!) More reasons why I won't buy or use either Nero or Roxio. (You can almost certainly install both without packet writing but they are still bloated monsters.)

Well right now i have Roxio in a dogfight, i can run nero fine i just don't have the full version, the reason i bought roxio a year ago, just had no need to install it till now, I had roxio on an external burner as i mentioned before somewhere and worked ok, now i have more resources have less functionality of the software.

I'll review the recommends i think you mad a few days ago, i just want something to add some background music to dvd slide shows for one thing, all the rest i don't need either

Are you running Vista as your operating system? If so, you don't need anything other than Vista's Windows Movie Maker to burn dvd slideshows. I made several of these using WMM for my sister. You can add titles, and music and transitions, and effects to your dvds.
