    etkiaheclc.exe ????

    Hello people,

I have just started being bugged by pop ups ... I have my pop up blocker set and never suffer normally. As usual with these things I checked to see what was on the start up lists in msconfig ... there is one item I cannot identify ... etkiaheclc.exe it says it is in c:\windows\system32\etkiaheclc.exe etkiaheclc
when checking even with showing hidden files I cannot find this exe. there are also registry entries, but as I don't know what it is yet I am loathe to go deleting things. oh and a google search on it came up with nothing. btw ... I have disabled this item in msconfig and it just regenerates itself.

I have run adaware se, avg full scan, trend housecall online scan. its still there and so are the pop ups.

hmmm lets see .... I think you want to know I have XP home and internet explorer 7, I don't think the hardware is of use to you for this one.

    Any ideas?

Looks like it might be program that's renaming itself, (to any name made up of a random combination of characters), as it loads. You might want to post a HijackThis log file and see if one of experts can help you get rid of the problem: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...d.php?t=167915

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

I thought maybe it was one of those, however, it has been here for 2 days and the name hasn't changed, but I can't find the exe file to delete it.

where do I get the software to run hijack this?

Maybe it doesn't change the name every time it loads ... just occasionally. Or maybe only when it detects that something is trying to find and delete it. It may also be a combination of programs that are watching each other's backs to be sure that if one get's killed, it'll be recreated.

It's on the instruction page I linked to above, (see the "Download Self-Extracting version" link on that page).

Please re-enable anything in msconfig that is disabled and ok out of msconfig. Rescan with hijackthis and post that log please. Do not reboot.

Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. Right click on the download link and select Save Target As. Save it to the desktop or to a folder in a permanent directory. It generates a log which will be created in the same folder you are running it from. Please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

    Hi Crunchie,

ok here is the new hijack this log ... I didn't need to re-enable the file in question because it regenerated itself, or is it all the other stuff I have disabled you wanted re-enabled?

    Looks like combofix got it. Can you do the following too please. I want to check something else;

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thank you very much Crunchie, everything is looking good at this end ... no more strange pop ups

Isn't it odd that when I use the computer I get adds for viruses and free mobile phones, but when my young daughter used it she got naked ladies

I really appreciate the time you have taken to help me, thank you
