two HDD one xp and one 98

    It's me again!!

I have this XP computer as most of you know. I also have a computer with another drive in it formatted with win98. Now I would like to add the win98 drive to my xp computer. Can I do I just add the other drive as slave to the 20gb and it will work ok?

Do you want to be able to boot into Windows 98 as well as XP? If so, then you will need to do a little more work. If all you want to do is access the files, then just connecting the drive should work fine.

Thanks jdc. No, I don't want to boot to 98 also, I just want to access the files on the other drive.

    Hi "just me"!

What file system are you using on your XP box? If NTFS,you can access Fat32 from it and read/use the files. but if you dual booted it,don't think the Fat32 could access the NTFS files. If your using Fat on your XP drive, then no problems either way.

I use Fat32 on my main box that i just installed XP-home to and my networked Win98 box plays nicely with it. Was a' bit of a pain to network tho'. Finally just dragged all the drives(partitions) into the shared files folder on the XP box and all was well. Don't give a' squat about security tho'(at least in my home), So turned off the XP (so-called) firewall. It can cause problems in networking and/or if your on cable/dsl using a LAN...

Thanks Ridge. The xp box is NTFS. I gave up on networking for the moment as I had to remove the stick of RAM in that other computer. Someone else needed it more than I did. And later I want to improve on the 98 box by adding a modem and another RAM chip, preferrably 128 stick. It only had 64 to start with.
So, for the time being, I'm just going to add the harddrive in the xp box.

    Another question

Relating to this thread, I've added the second 5.1 hdd. Now though, I want move/remove all files from it. As in format. (I've sold the other box w/12gb hdd) but kept the 5.1gb hdd. Installed in xp computer, I want to wipe the 5.1gb.

Note: I've tried this when I had the other box but it wouldn't show any partitions other than the C: drive. And someone mentioned I should disconnect the C: drive and when I did that I got beep noises and "system failure" messages.

Can I do this within the computer without losing the 40gb? Or can I just open the other drive F: and delete programs without formatting? (btw, can the registry on the 5.1gb be accessed?)

If the "F:" drive shows up in "My Computer",you should be able to right click it and choose "format" to wipe the files from it. Works ok in Win98,but not sure about XP...

Thanks Ridge. Yes, right-click on F: shows format. I learn something new every day in VDR.

I'll move what I want to keep to a folder on desktop then just format it.

Well, that worked, except I forgot to notice file format FAT32 or NTFS. So, it formatted FAT32. Should I reformat to NTFS or does this matter as long as I don't add a OS to it?

I'd leave it fat32. That way if you were to add it as a 2nd hdd in a 98 machine the files can be read. While NT can read Fat32, Fat32 can NOT read NT.

Thanks Train. That settles it for me. FAT32 it is.

Besides, working with XP, I can not for the life of me see any advantages for NT in a home inviourment.
