Would love to know how to set the resolution though. Tried safe mode (suppose when I get back from work - well tomorrow it'll have to be when I get back from work - I could try updating XP in Safe Mode) but same when i rebooted. Can't get the upgrades like this either.

When you boot into Safe Mode, open the Device Manager and uninstall the display adapter. When you boot normal, Plug and Play will find it, reinstall the drivers, and set the resolution.

The only barrier to knowledge is the perception that you already have it.

Phil K--I have an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card and a Dell LCD monitor. When I right click Desktop|Properties|Settings|Advanced I am offered an Adapter tab. At the bottom is a button "List all Modes". Clicking that shows all the resolutions the Monitor supports. You can choose from there.

Thats just it Jim. I got (I'll be trying once again when the replacement graphics card arrives) a screensaver-type screen with "Not optimal configuration for 1600x1050" dark grey dialog box with white writing wandering aimlessly around the screen, and giving me no opportunity to actually change it. I hope that the card when it arrives (used from ebay, the woman needed to keep costs down to minimum) has a cd with drivers.
I'm after a way to get in - safe mode i could use, tried to change it there, but back to the not optimised floating dialog box on reboot.

Once you get the card, you really should download the lastest drivers from Nvidia themselves. Drivers on CD are usually old and shouldn't be used.

There's a link to a chart which surely must show every slot ever put on a board.

That sounds like something being produced by the monitor itself, not Windows. A Windows dialog box does not normally move. You might look into the available controls on the monitor itself to see if you can turn this warning off.
