Completing HJT process when I got a blue screen...
I was in the process of cleaning up my computer using the help of the HJT forum when I got the dreaded BLUE SCREEN. (see link for initial thread posted: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...=1#post1314251).
I was in the process of doing an online scan when I got the following message:
I tried the last set of directions and I got a blue screen:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
Technical Info:
***Stop: 0X000000ED, 0x826FBDB0, 0XC0000015, 0X00000000, 0X00000000***
I tried to restart my computer, but it keeps restarting after the Windows XP screen shows up...a quick bleep of a BLUE screen...and then the process starts over again.
I was recommended to this forum to see if I can get this issue resolved, so that I can complete HJT process.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Boot into Safe Mode, then go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>Startup & Recovery>Settings and uncheck "Automatically restart". Then the next time you reboot you'll probably get a Stop error, which is much easier to troubleshoot. If not, then it almost certainly is a hardware problem. If you get a Blue Screen, post back with all the details of what it says.

When I try to restart in Safe Mode (F8)...
The Acer screen shows (normal)
The Windows screen shows (normal)
Right before it finishes loading...I get a quick blue screen (unable to see what it says)
Then it restarts the entire process.
What next?

With the Acer screen it allows me the option (F2) to change some options. Is there anything that I need to change under these options?
With the Windows XP screen when I push (F8) I have the following options:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Enhanced Write Filter Restore Mode (restores one level)
Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu
I have already tried the 1st one "Safe Mode". What other one(s) should I try?
Thanks.

Unfortunately if you can't get into Safe Mode, there is no way out of the Automatic Restart loop For future reference, one of the first things you should do after installing Windows is to go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>Startup & Recovery>Settings and uncheck "Automatically restart". It is an idiotic default setting, that is only ever any use on servers.
For the immediate problem, you need to do an over-the-top re-install of Windows XP here. Boot up with the XP CD in the drive and let Setup run. Go past the "C" and "R" repair options by pressing Enter just as if you're doing a clean install and you'll eventually get an option to "Repair an existing installation". That's the one you want. If it asks about formatting you've gone wrong, so start over.
You'll get to keep your existing apps & settings, but you need to re-install SP2, Windows Updates & any unsigned drivers afterwards. NOTE: Be aware that you'll lose any protection from Blaster / Sasser type worms. Don't go online without a firewall, whether the built in Windows one or 3rd party.
How to perform a re-install of WinXP
Repair XP
WinXP Non-destructive Total Rebuild

I just need to find my copy of XP 1st. I will read over the links you posted. When I finish my re-install I will post my results/outcome.
Thanks again.
