Setting up new system

Hi,

I just bought an Asus A7N8X mobo (nForce2) with an AMD athlon xp 2400+ and some 333 ddram.

When I boot up and in windows too (2000 pro), it says my CPU is a 1800+.

I know I should change some settings in the BIOS, but I'm not sure which ones, and at which values.

I think my RAM is also erroneously detected, but I'm not sure. I'll check with SiSoft Sandra when I finish my drivers setup and such.


If anyone can lend a hand it'd be appreciated!

The jumper when set to 1-2 pins (default), enable support for Front Side Bus 333/266. When set to pins 2-3, it sets support for FSB 200 only.

The Athlon xp 2400+ runs at 266 FSB frequency (default value is ok)

Still, it gets identified as a athlon xp 1800+.

That's why I'm sure there's some other setting to fiddle with, liek:

CPU EXTERNAL FREQUENCY 100 mhz by default
CPU multiple setting [auto]
CPU FREQUENCY MYLTIPLE [5.0X]
MEMORY FREQUENCY

This is under AWARD BIOS.

CPU EXTERNAL FREQUENCY 100 mhz by default

Needs to be showing 133 mhz.

I never could be sure anyway of what external frequency was actually affecting, so I didn't dare touch it.

Do you have PC2700 ram? If so, in Bios you should be able to select 166/33 for System/PCI Frequency Ratio and no you will not hurt it if you decide to select 133/33 instead. The FSB will just run at 266 instead of 333 is all. All you would be doing is underclocking the system.

So, I have pc2700. I bought 2 * 256 mb 333mhz RAM

Now, I just have to try and set it correctly without busting anything.

I didnt buy this for underclocking, I HAVE to try and get the most of it.

changing from 100mhz to 133mhz made jump from 1800+ to 2400+.

Now, I gotta check my memory and agp speeds.

Hi Diabolus!

I have put my CPU external ferquency to 133mhz, as it is half of my Athlon XP 2000 FSB (266mhz) and your XP 2400. In this respect, please follow the Asus board manual instructions.

Therefore, with that CPU external frequency, when I start my PC it recognizes my CPU as an AMD XP 2000, nevertheless my DDR does not have a 333mhz frequency, but only 133mhz(it is Sync with the processor frequency). Now, I dont believe it is possible to put the memory to 333mhz, since the maximum memory frequency you can get is 266 and setting the memory multiplier by 200% in relation of the CPU external frequency, which I dont recommend.

Yes, its true what you are thinking... it is not worth to buy DDR333 with a CPU FSB of 266....
