Windows 7 not compatible with aero software while gaming

i play age of kings age of empires. and i've done some research online and it seems to be that the game is not compatible with the Aero Software. one way to fix the color glitch is to close explorer.exe which helps. but i was wondering if there was an easier way. also the game resolution keeps chopping 2 sides of the game off with 2 black bars. is there anyway to make the game resolution full screen on my new 18 in LCD Monitor?

Run it in compatibility mode. I believe one of the features of this is the ability to temporarily set your theme to Windows Classic when playing the game.
