    Defrag C Drive

I am using a IBM VL400 CPU with Windows XP. It has SP2 with 192 Mb [yes, 192 Mb] 797MH. Intel Pen III. Problem is when I Defrag the C Drive I get a error message.[*] "Disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume. Please run Chkdsk /f. " when I use chkdsk /f I get only "cannot lock current drive" I did not think I was locking any thing? Or that I had a schedule for this action. How do I get the[*] off so that I can defrag the disk. I have 15% spare on the disk to defrag.

    192 what? MB?
    cannot lock current drive
means, that something else is using hard drive. Try Safe Mode.

If chkdsk cannot lock the drive, a message should appear that asks you if you want to check the drive the next time you restart the computer. Respond with a Yes, Reboot, and you should then see chkdsk doing it's thing right before Windows loads.

    Hi

    1. F8 for safe mode brings up mult files under system32 and hangs
    2. No msg appers before the Windows screen appears. It just goes into its question: One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel . . . Windows will not check the disk. [ans below]

    Stage 1 of 1 [ok]
Stage 2 of 3 [never gets to 3 of 3]
Correcting error in index $0 for file 4397.
    [then it hangs]
Might also mention that when I do a defrag, it ask the question: ..... do a chkdsk /f. When I do that under 'run' it hangs and the HD leds is lite.
Nevers gets a screen to ask for schedule of next visit.

In Run, have you tried typing cmd, hit Enter, then type chkdsk /f in that command window instead of the way you're doing it?

Yes, Photolady, I got "the type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive."
    And again, it hangs up

Do you keep tapping (not holding) F8 when computer restarts?

Try typing "Chkntfs C: /D" at the Command Prompt. That should reset disk checking back to it's default settings.

After trying all the suggestions above I still have the same problem. When I run Defrag, I get the error message "Disk degragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: [C]. Please run Chkdsk /f" I ran it and ran the other attributes to chkdsk with no results, positive. [chkdsk - chkNTSF, etc.

Goto My Computer->Right Click C Drive->Properties->Tools tab->Click on Check Now under Error Reporting->Check both the boxes under Check Disk Options->Click on Start.
Once the process is complete, restart your computer and make sure you Disk Defragmenter works fine.

Note that it might say that chkdsk will run in the next reboot. In that case, Restart computer and chkdsk will run during next reboot.

If the above does not work, boot to the M$ cd and use the recovery console [ first R]
At the prompt [type in] chkdsk C: /F /R
    now hit enter.

/F should take care of the bad sector(s) you seem to be hitting.

Now go to bed and get a good nights sleep is what I suggest as it can take hours to complete.
