I read the whole thread but could not get past the Administrator's password problem until my eureka moment. Here is the solution for anyone handy with a screwdriver and maybe $20 to spare.

Remove the hard drive from the computer that is giving you grief. Plug it in to a USB to IDE (or SATA) adapter. They cost about $20. Plug the USB plug into a working PC. Explore the root of the problem drive and find the file "boot.ini". You may need to modify the folder options to show hidden files and folders, system files, and extensions to be able to find the file. Right click on boot.ini and select "Properties". Uncheck the "Read-only" attribute. Open the file with Notepad and find "/safeboot" and delete it. I deleted "/safeboot:network" in my ini. Save the file. Go back to the file properties and make the file read-only again. Perform a safe hardware removal of drive the and re-install it. Finish your re-installation of XP.

    Good luck.

Maybe the scene from the movie "Office Space" where the guys had their way with the office copier might just be the best solution. A 20 LB sledge hammer would suffice nicely in my humble opinion, and what a great feeling of power it would generate in "pay back"!

    Thanks saslab!
Your comment #6 got me out of the same problem you reported.
In my case, what caused my WinXP to get in that loop was that I had requested to restart in safe mode (via msconfig). Then the laptop would not start on Safe Mode and I tried repairing Windows XP.
After following your suggestion I was able to get the Windows XP setup running again.

Like you experienced, I'm right now locked in safe mode and repair setup mode.
If I power off the computer and then turn back on, it goes back to the same repair setup routine screen, again and again, in an unending loop. I am stuck with this repair setup routine. How to stop/cancel this repair setup?

I am able to choose safe mode when pressing F8 on the computer cold boot, but I get this display: "Windows xp cannot run in safe mode. Setup will restart now." Thus, I cannot access the safe mode.

Can you give me step by step clear instructions to get out of this unending cycle? Thanks.

sjhawar , you need to start your own thread please.

By bumping on someone's topic it makes it confusing for the tech to understand who they are helping. This can in turn cause the wrong support to be given and can cause instability or worse to happen to your system.

Please post more information as to your exact issue in your topic. Include any error messages you get as well as your system specs. This will help us to assist you more efficiently.

    Thank you for your cooperation,
