    Computer Won't Recognize CDRom

I have just about finished rebuilding/upgrading my brother-in-law's computer. It was a 486 DX-66 with a 2X propietary MKEPanasonic CDRom. This machine was running DOS 6.22 and somebody loaded Win98 overtop. I have a new Asus P5A-B AT MB with 128 MB PC100 Ram, an AMD K6-2 475 CPU. The hard drive is the same 1.2 GB Western Digital Caviar 21200 that was in the old box. I removed the old CDRom and replaced it with an AOpen 40X MTRP.

Now the computer will not recognize the new CDRom - when I go to Control Panel and Device Manager the CDRom doesn't show up. When I try to Add New Hardware, the only options I get under the CDRom Drivers is the Mitsumi 1X or the MKEPanasonic 2X. This information is obviously stored on the hard drive somewhere not allowing the Win98 to recognize the CDRom. What can I do to rectify this? I'm so close - yet so far... please help!

It's probably needs a driver for that specific Cd-Rom and the generic Windows one will not read it.

Well Windows 95, and all windows has built in basic drivers for CD ROM. If its not reading the CD ROM its IN MY EXPERIENCE most likely it is because the contacts are not good. Try pulling out the IDE cable and reinserting it a few times that will hopefully rub off the oxidation and make the contacts read each other.

If you were able to install Windows 95 using the drive (and DOS drivers from the boot diskette), but you can't use the drive after Windows was installed, you may need to have Windows load the DOS drivers for it during the boot process. This was a known problem with some drives and drivers. If you can boot using a boot diskette and access the CD-ROM drive, then this should work.

That would explain a problem I've been having with one of my older systems then. The DOS CD drivers have to be loaded from the autoexc file right?

If you would, could you do your best at a quick step by step guide for doing this?

If you download a Windosw 98SE boot diskette creation file from www.bootdisk.com you can look at the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files to see what drivers are being loaded. The universal IDE CD-ROM driver file and the MSCDEX.EXE files will be on the 98SE boot diskette that is created. You will need to modify the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files on the hard drive to load the two files from the appropriate location on your hard drive, after you have copied them to that location from the boot diskette.
