Microsoft to charge for updates as a service?
Anyone read the June 11, 2002 edition of PC Magazine. A friend told me about it I have not seen the magazine. Seems like Microsoft is considering charging as a service the updates you now get from the Windows Update site.

Hi,
Is this the Upgrade license or the Updates?
I'm assuming that the new cost is in relation only to discounts for upgrades to newer products as opposed to fixes on existing ones?

Microsoft Licensing Basics
Licensing software through Microsoft volume license programs is different from purchasing packaged software through retail sources.

None of this licensing stuff has anything to do with the original post. The original post mentioned updates obtained from the Windows Update site.
Enterprise Volume Licensing is a completely different thing.

And the Enterprise Volume Licensing program is going through some major changes soon. So maybe this is what the original poster was hearing.

Quoted from the Article. I have not seen the magazine like I said so I do not know what the context is.
"Among it's big bets, M$ plans to offer software as a service, starting with Windows update and plans to shift to managed code-- software that keeps track of all of it's components."

I think I got my leg pulled, just found out that is not a quote from the article. Guess I'll have to go out and buy the magazine myself.

You don't have to buy the magazine. You can read it on their website.
