    Add the following line to the config.sys file on your boot floppy under the [Common] section:

    device=emm386.exe x=A000-FFFF

    make sure the file emm386.exe is on your boot floppy disk.

    If not I can email it to you.

    Just make this change to config.sys save it and reboot with boot disk and try to run setup again.

    Let us know what happens.

    Excerpted from Newsgroup Post

    ..."Did you try to install with only the video card installed, ASUS recommends removing all other cards when first setting up the system"...

    ..."I had problems with the 1003 bios that was shipped on the board. I immediately flashed the 1004.04 bios which let me get the system up. There's now a 1006-001 version which I believe is stable and should probably be the best bet. Be sure to flash it exactly as Asus directs (saving the old one just in case) and be sure to load and save the
    default settings after flashing"...

    Paisan,

    I added the line to config.sys and tried rebooting system. emm386 is on there...the one that you emailed me.

    with cd-rom support.

    When using bootup disk, stopped after displaying "windows expanded memory driver version 4.9"

    without cd-rom support.

    warning: user specified ranges overlap
    emm386 not installed - unable to set page frame base address

    press any key when ready...

    emm386 successfully installed
    expanded memory services unavailable
    emm386 active

    pc now locks up.

    Smitee,

    The only card installed is the video card. This system was up and running. For what ever reason, the owner was deleting files and deleted windows. Go figure.

    I am now trying to do a clean install and it just won't happen.

    Try changing the line
    device=emm386.exe x=A000-FFFF
    to this:
    device=emm386.exe noems x=A000-EFFF
    NOTE: Change the FFFF to EFFF
    You might have to experiment with memory addresses. For example if x=A000-EFFF still locks up pc try the following lines one at a time rebooting and running setup after each to see if pc still locks up:

    device=emm386.exe noems x=C000-DFFF
    device=emm386.exe noems x=C800-CFFF

    Then try booting from floppy and with and without cdrom support for each change and see what happens.

    post back what happens

    No luck. Still using the startup disk that you told me to put himem.sys amd emm386 on.

    Would the bios have anything to do with this. I have loaded default settings. Grasping at straws here. What about the board...asus k7m?

    I would not be so quick to flash the BIOS. PC worked before with this version of BIOS i assume so flashing it may not help.

    I would suggest pulling everything out of the pc except cpu, memory, hard drive and video card. Of course leave floppy and cd hooked up. Then boot from floppy again and see what happens.

    BTW, how far into setup process do you get? Does it run scandisk all the way through? If so were does the setup stop?

    I would also go into the BIOS and try setting PNP OS to the opposite of what it is now set to. Save this setting and exit BIOS. Boot from boot disk and run setup again.

    PC did work before. For some reason she was removing some files and for whatever reason...she deleted windows. I am trying to start over from scratch and it just isn't working.

    It scans the system and when done gives you the option to view log or exit. It is after this that I get nothing or the error. Somtimes going to e:\win98 or c:\win98 (depending on where I am trying to install from).

    Did you try changing the PNP OS setting in the BIOS?

    If that didnt work when you run setup from the c: prompt type:

    setup /is
    Hit enter and see what happens.

    Paisan,

    To get bootup disk to work had to remove the device= lines you had me put in.

    Errors continue...with and without "/is"

    Standard mode cannot run because of a problem with your extended memory manager. Try reconfiguring your memory manager or replacing it with HIMEM.SYS. If you are using HIMEM.SYS, you need to reconfigure it or obtain a newer version.

    Think I will call it quits and let the guy who taught my computer repair and upgrade class deal with it.

    Thanks for your valiant effort.

    I dont mind helping at all.

    One thing I would do is ask your teacher for a copy of the boot disk he uses. Try that boot disk before you lug the whole machine over to him or if you have had enough, let him have a go at it.

    Let us know if you or he figure out whats up.
