    Windows WONT install

Have been trying to install windows and keep getting fault in msdos extender this occurs after typing in the command e:win98/setup. Have tried switching all major hardware like cables, cd rom, floppy, etc with no success. Sometimes dont even get an error, just a flashing cursor.

    Motherboard is an Asus k7m

I am guessing that you have Win98 copied to your E:\ drive.
    You typed e:win98/setup
    it should be e:\win98/setup

Does the Boot sequence check out ok?

At the Dos prompt do you have CDRom suport?
    Is your HD formatted? Fdisked?

Have fdisk(ed), reformatted. Using a windows 98 startup disk. When I get to a: I go to e: which is cd-rom. (d: is ramdisk) Access the cd by using e:\cd win98 and then attempt to install from cd by using e:\win98\startup (as I have before).

It attempts to install then stops giving an error to the effect of "standard mode -Fault in MS-Dos extender".

No luck yet. Thanks for the links. It is showing the same error that I am getting.

How do you restore master boot record? If you put in another hard drive, the mbr would not be a concern (if that was the problem..) right?

Does anyone know where the cmos jumper is on this board? I am working without a manual.
    Asus k7m.

    Thanks again.

Are you typing startup or setup? It should be setup.

My guess is that this is a result of a memory manager or something memory resident.

Perhaps your bootdisk is faulty, old or virus infected.

You could try going to BOOTDISK.COM and downloading the appropriate disk for your OS.

If you have a clean, virus free boot diskette, you can do a FDISK /MBR to restore the master boot record. If you do not have any of the issues listed in the two Microsoft Knowledge Base articles, then chances are the problem is being caused by bad RAM memory. You might try swapping modules (if you have more than one) or using some different ones.

I did try another memory module, but keep getting the same error. I will try another. What I have read and what I have been told is that it has something to do with himem not loading or something like that.

It would be best if someone took a crayon and drew me a picture at this point as I'm about ready to just shoot it. It has to be something simple I would think. But I am lost.

The readme file on win98 startup disk says that after I "sys c:" the following files are copied to the hard drive:

    io.sys
    msdos.sys
    command.com

Only command.com is on see after doing "a: format c: /s"

IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS are hidden files, and will not normally show up on a DIRectory listing. Try a DIR /AH to see them.

The usual reasons for HIMEM.SYS not loading are: It can't be found or read from the source, or bad memory (or a bad memory controller on the motherboard).

One last thing to check: Check to see that HIMEM.SYS is on your boot diskette, and that is loading in your boot diskette's CONFIG.SYS file. You should see a message about this when you boot.

I have seen problems like this before. Let's start from scratch Go here and get a fresh Bootdisk http://www.startdisk.com/Web2/ubd/ubd.htm Do the whole Shebang ( a good album by Shedaisy, by the way) Fdisk, Format. Now go to the CD with Windows and do "setup" forget about the system stuff (/s) hopeful the install will go as normal. I am really interested in this one, so post back.

Downloaded a fresh bootdisk and am getting ready to try it. Fdisk, Format...but you said to leave off the "/s". Are you talking about when I format or after that when I tried to just "sys the drive"?

To be honest...I don't think it will work. What should I try next?
