Closing Word 2000 document causes "Runtime Error"

Upon closing a Microsoft Word document, I frequently get the following message:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\WINWORD.EXE
    abnormal program termination

Microsoft Word then closes down and I have to restart it to continue working.

I always save a Word document before closing it, so I have not lost data due
to this problem, but the problem is so pervasive and annoying that I would
    simply like to know:

    1. What is an "abnormal program termination"?

    2. What causes "Runtime Errors"?

    3. What can be done to stop them?

    Thank you.

Open your registry editor (start, run, regedit) and navigate to hkey current user\software\microsoft\office\9.0\word\data then delete the "data" key, exit and reboot. This won't harm word in any way, it simply forces it to reset all it's defaults.
Also have you installed any of the service updates?
Is there any antivirus software running?

The problem can occur with any Word document, but not with every Word document.

    yerjonesen: Thanks for your suggestion.

    1. I have not installed any of the service updates.
    2. Norton AntiVirus is always enabled.

    To PC Solutions:

I'm using Microsoft Word 2000 (9.0.2720) that came with Microsoft Works Suite 2000. Where can I find the service updates for this particular version?

    Hmmm...
Good question. The Sr1 & Sr2 updates appear to be for the full Office 2000 suite only
I think I would take a look here, might help
