    Can't delete corrupted subdirectory

One of my subdirectories (C:\WINDOWS.BAK\SYSTEM) has apparently become
    corrupted. Symptoms:
    1) If I run SCANDISK, the system hangs when SCANDISK reaches WINDOWS.BAK\SYSTEM.
    2) At the DOS prompt if I use the DIR command at the SYSTEM subdirectory level, the system hangs.
    3) At the DOS prompt if I use the DELTREE command to delete the SYSTEM subdirectory, I get a "read error."
Can anyone tell me how to fix the corruption or how to delete the subdirectory?

Hmmm... Sounds like you've tried all the standard commands. I'd next try either Spinrite or Norton disk Doctor. Or, if you'd rather not spend any money, backup up your data and How to Use Fdisk and Format to Partition or Repartition a Hard Disk.

Tip: DELTREE ignores attributes. (See MS-DOS 6.22 HELP/DELTREE/Notes).

I use Volkov Commander 4.0 or 5.0 - the best shell for DOS. Programm look like Norton Commander, but more ease delete any subditrectory then NC, even subdirectory not free.
One inconvenience - help file on russian, but interface on english.
    ftp://ftp.compuserv.com.ua/incoming/util/vc.zip
Download and extract to dirrectory VC on any disk, this maybe floppy disk, and run vc.com.
