    Outlook Express slowdown

    I added the registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client

then DWORD PreventRun in order to stop MSN Messenger from running every time I start Outlook Express.

But now OE takes a REALLY long time (30 seconds compared to less than one second it took before i did the registry hack) to start.

Does anyone know why this happens, or is it a twisted tactic from Microsoft in order to make you run MSN Messegner? Silly, I know, but how much of a bad idea was it to make you have to do a registry hack in order to stop the messenger from running in the first place?

    Thanks for any help.

Try putting the registry back to the way it was, open OE then Tools> Options> Other> take out the check from Enable Instant Messenger.

    OR

Unintall Instant Messenger altogether. If you don't find it Add/Remove Programs, Search for SYSOC.INF and open it. Look fro the string for "msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7" and remove hide but leave the commas as they are. Messenger will now show in Add/Remove Programs.

There is an explanation for the slowdown on one of the sites that has the instructions for removing messenger, and I believe how to avoid the slowdown, but offhand I do not remember the site. A search for sites about removing messenger should get you there eventually. Microsoft is trying to force you to use their Messenger instead of the competition, same as with Explorer.

Change back registry hack you entered. You can easily remove Messenger using this command:

Click Start >Click Run...paste line below...hit ok. Messenger gone!

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove[/url]

    OR

    Try this fix:

** Open up Register Editor by running "regedit" command.
** Click on "Edit" and select "Find".
** Copy and paste FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541 onto the "Find what" box and click on "Find Next".
** Once found, click on the plus sign in front of it and you will find InProc32 and LocalServer32.
** Select one of them then right click on default under the name column and select "modify", then simply delete what's in the Value Data box.
    ** Repeat for the other.

Put your registry back the way it was and use this (found by CornerPocket I believe). Just rename your Messenger folder to MessengerOld. Messenger is gone and OE loads very quick. At least it does for me. And this seemed to be the least onerous way of getting rid of Messenger.
