Can Not Run Unicode version of ATL.DLL

    Hi,
I am running a 500 Mhz PII home built system with Win98 SE. I have MS Office etc. on my computer. I have an annoyance. During boot, my computer delays a bit when an error message is displayed. "Can not run the unicode version of ATL.dll on Windows 95. Please install the correct version."

What is this about? Where is the correct version?

It seems that I have been able to fix this problem in the past, as I have seen this before, but I have lost track of any directions I may have been provided.

Trundle on over to c:\windows\system and right click atl.dll. Look at the description in it (does it say NT and unicode ?). It comes in two flavors (ANSI and UNICODE). Win9x machines should run the version for ANSI. It's part of the vc6 redistributables - so if you're stuck I spose I could send it (SP5 version). What is the version you show - and is this the only atl.dll on your machine? Do you know how to use regsvr32 to unregister and register self-registering dll's?

Thanks for the response. The only ATL.dll is file version 3.00.8168 ATL module for Win NT Unicode. I do not know how to use regedit or regsrv32.

I sent you an email - but it would sure be nice to know how it came to be. Do you have a good virus checker? Do you think some website sent it to support a control on their page (and managed to get you the wrong version) ?

I have received your email, but have not acted on it yet today. I have the latest McAfee, and I automatically boot with it turned on, which lenghtens my boot time. In this vein, I have found that the McAfee software sometimes seems to effect my internet connection, in that it will slow or stop downloads. (More accurately, when Mcafee is closed, all of a sudden my download continues. This may be circumstantial.)

Regarding the website transfer of ATL.dll, I have no idea and really don't know how to check.
I did a complete check of my system just now and found the ANSI version of ATL.DLL (version 2.00.7024) in the C:\program files\intel\Alert on LAN\win9x\proxy folder. (Sorry I missed this earlier.)

Would it be appropriate to just delete the system ATL.dll and replace it with the proxy ATL.dll?
