Memory Parity error detected. system halted

I am having Gateway PC with windows 98, when I am using my browser, it giving this error message. Microsoft says I should update 'ATI RAGE Fury video adapter', with updated driver. Did some one had this kind of problems and what you did to resolve this. Where to get this updated driver. Gateway doesn't have this one.

    Any thoughts :=(

    Thanks

Sounds like typical Gateway tech support.
A memory parity error generally has nothing to do with your video card driver. It indicates a problem with your PC's RAM memory, assuming your PC has memory that is capable of using parity and your BIOS supports it. With a Gateway PC, unless it is one of their servers, I would think that you do not have parity memory. Check your BIOS settings to see if 'ECC memory' or 'Memory Parity Checking' is enabled. If it is, try disabling it.

You can get ATI video drivers from www.atitech.com if you really need them.

Thanks for quick reply, But I was upgrade recently from 95 to 98 and I am having problems since then, microsoft saying this error occurs on 98 when 'ATI RAGE fury video adapter' with an out-of date driver. My waranty period with Gateway has expired, so I can't get help from them. I will try to change my BIOS setting today and let you know.

    Thanks

    Your tech is referring to

Q232768 - Error Message: Memory Parity Error Detected. System Halted http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q232/7/68.ASP

My guess is that it revolves around the video memory - does that one use memory stolen from the system? (is your memory report less than you know is on the mem sticks?)

It may be here http://www.gateway.com/support/produ...6000711a.shtml but you don't say enough about the card (or onboard?) or the system for me to really guess.

Thanks for the reply, here are the details about my system. Gateway 2000, G6-180, which is 180 MHz speed, Video card : PCI, STB ET6000. I am not sure whether this card will support Windows98. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

    Thanks

Yesterday, I have checked my BIOS to change the settings to disable 'ECC' or 'Memory parity' but I couldn't find either one in my BIOS settings. I am having Pentium 180 speed, model is G6-180.

If you have an STB ET6000 (Standard for Gateway PC's - mine has one), you don't need ATI video drivers since you don't have an ATI video card. The driver that comes with Windows 98 works fine. This would not be the cause of your memory parity error.

Did you any one know why I am getting this error. Does STB ET6000 support Windows 98.

Did any know how to change BIOS setting for 'ECC' or 'Memory Parity Checking' in Gateway 2000 G6-180 PC.

As I indicated in my previous post, the standard Windows 98 driver for the STB ET6000 video card works fine. It is what I am using, and I am having no problems. I'm not sure if your PC even has settings for ECC or parity memory. I'll check mine later tonight to see if mine does. If it does, I'll let you know how to check or change them.

My Gateway's BIOS does not have the settings that would enable it to use ECC or parity memory. I have not checked the hardware manual for it to see if there are motherboard jumper settings for this option, but that is probably not likely. The settings would be under the 'Advanced' heading if they existed. Even so, I would still suspect a RAM memory problem somewhere. If you have more than 2 memory sticks (SIMMs) in your PC, you might try using only 1 pair at a time to see if the problem persists. It could also be a motherboard problem as well, or heat buildup if either your power supply fan or processor fan (if you have one) has failed. It is still possible that it is a software problem, but that is less likely. Other than those items, I have no other ideas.
