This is the microsoft page i looked at. I have 10 gig left on my drive and i have not used the undo move/delete because i haven't been able to delete it in the first place. Also, it doesn't say how to fix the network one which i think it is. Cheers anyway.

I don't know anything networking, but when I have a file that just refuses to go, I create a folder, drag the thing into it and delete the folder.

I crash...therefore I am.

What you may need to do is copy anything else "good" out of the directory this file is in (temporarily), then delete the directory. Then recreate the directory and move your other files back.
PS. Make sure the network connect between your borther's PC and your's is broken when doing this.

Try this, right click on the file and select properties. Note the DOS shortname if the full name is longer than 7 letters.
Now restart in ms-dos mode
You should probably at the Windows directory, (if not, enter cd windows\desktop instead of cd desktop)
Now enter each line:
cd desktop
del filename
where filename is the DOS short name, if the file is longer than 7 letters (eg: filenam~1)
ctrl-alt-del to restart

If it's on the Desktop then DON'T delete that folder. Try what Rog suggested. DOS mode may enable you to delete it.

Things just got weirder. When i tried to delete it in dos it says file not found (i did a dir command to look for it so the filename is correct). When i did the dir it also says the file size (about 5.6Mb can't be precise). In windows when i right click and go to properties it doesn't have a size or a dos name or dos properties and when i tick any of the boxes (eg archive) and click on apply or ok it just resets to being unchecked. Eh?

Posted on this thread, got the thank you message, but it never showed up. Go to the desktop in windows explorer, right click the file and choose cut. It should be dimmed but still highlighted. Now go up to the toolbar, and hit delete.
It would be a great pleasure to know I have helped you, and that the fix worked and might help others. You might help me by posting which linux distro, version, and desktop manager you use. Have a most excellent day, dude/ette.

You may have to include the extension to delete it from DOS. Try again using the name the dir command found, but include the extension if you didn't before.

I don't mean to be rude but if u look a bit further up to my reply to when u first suggested it, it doesn't save the setting. if i click on apply the tick dissappears. if i click on ok and go back into the properties it is again unchecked. Very strange.

Attributes?
If you set attrib +r // for read-only
...........attrib +s // for system file
then you will have much difficulty deleting the file until you reset the attributes to:
attrib -r -s filename
If this still does not work, open the file with a disk-editor, and set all bytes in file to zero. This effectivly kills the file. In fact, DOS had an external command called kill that would write zero's to every data_byte in the file.
If that does not work, then there is something non-congruent with your File Allocation Table and data on hd*. Having difficulty changing any other files on your HD was support this clause.
Good luck,
