Create Primary DOS Partition = "No Space..." message. ??

I have no clue what I am doing. I have a computer I'm trying to reformat for my son and I've followed all of the instructions I've read from different posts but to no avail. I'm getting a "No space to create a DOS partition." message right now. I have a 6 gig (drive 1) and a 1 gig (drive 2)HD. I've completed the reformat but I'm getting a message that basically states the FAT file is missing or the drive needs to be partitioned. I can't figure this out. HELP!!

Thanks but I'm still lost. If I boot with the startup disk and choose option 1 (with cd) it gives me a message saying it needs to be partitioned. If I go to fdisk and try to partition the damn thing, it says "no space". What gives??

I've followed the instructions to the T but I'm NOT getting the same responses. THAT's the problem. I can't partition OR reformat. I'm sure I'm missing something, but what?

fdisk - Choosing option 1.)Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive. +ENTER+

Choosing option 1.) Create Primary DOS Partition. +ENTER+

Message: No space to create a DOS partition.

Are there existing partitions/logical drives? If so, you'll need to delete them first.

Doh! Not computer talk! I'm ignorant.

I have two drives. One is the original C drive (1 gig). The other is one I added a couple of years ago (6 gig). I changed the jumpers and made the 6 gig the main and the old one the slave............I think. I did the reformat process and now I'm stuck. How would I go about deleting those thingamajigs?

O.k., I think I got it. Thanks Paul D. I did need to delete the "non-DOS" partition first. Duuuh.

Now it won't let me format!!! Bad command or file name message even after using the extractebd.cabformat.com command. A:\> or C:\> prompt is the same.

Persistence pays off. I kept hitting retry until it gave in. I got "invalid media type reading drive C", so I gave "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr". It worked. See, it doesn't take a genius to figure this stuff out. It just takes a genius to get it done in under 6 friggin hours!!!!!!!!!!!

When you run fdisk and look at info on the drive you are trying to format do you see the drive listed in fdisk and is the primary partition set active?

Post what you see when you look at the info on the drives in fdisk.

    Let us know.

    Status: A
    Type: PRI DOS
    Volume Label: blank
    Mbytes: 6135

Now how do I install win98?
