Z390-E won't boot when I add hard drives

One possible idea to permanently fix the issue would be to make sure you have all of the data backed up from the drive(s) that are giving you the message, then reformat those drives (delete all partitions and then reformat), then reboot to see if you are still getting the message(s). If not, copy the data back and check again by rebooting. If all is well then, the issue may be solved.

Strange, I got your reply to the above (about formatting and copying the stuff back) on my phone but not on my computer. Anyway, yes, that would probably work but the problem seems to be solved. I won't know for sure until I've booted successfully a few more times but it looks as though all is well and I have 3 additional disks in the machine now.

I would still like to know what any of this means:
'Fixing (J: ) Stage 2: 89% (147299 of 163590); Total 67% ETA: 0:08:40

What's stage 1, are there additional stages beyond two, what do the %ages refer to? etc. And I'm curious about what win 10 thought needed fixing on drives that were fully functional when I took them out of the old machine.

Stage 1 likely completes before you get a chance to see that part of the message, and it changes to stage 2 on the status message.

I agree but 'fixing' makes me very nervous and I had no complaints from the same machine when the disks were added via a USB docking station. It still doesn't like one of them which was formatted in the docking station before being added internally. That doesn't make sense.

For that drive I got a Megatrends BIOS message saying, 'Backup your data and replace your hard drive, failure is imminent and could cause problems.'

I might have hit on something. I was in the Disk Manager and I noticed that the SSD Disk 0, the boot drive is now Disk 2. It was definitely 0 before this issue. I didn't think it was possible for the machine to change the designation but that's what appears to have happened.

I believe it became Disk 1 when I added one drive and then changed again to Disk 2 when I added the second drive. I'm still struggling with the third drive so I'll be able to test my theory. So far it's booting just fine with two additional drives but if it had to change it's designation, I'm not surprised that something had to be fixed.

I put the third drive in and it's back to:

I think it's shuffling drive letters again.

OK, I think all is well, the machine now boots with all 3 drives added and the data seems to be intact. I don't know what all that fixing was about, if you ever get more info on that, let me know. I just booted successfully again. Looking good, Ill be back if it goes south.

Did you see the links in my Post #18? That had some info. The "fixing" was from chkdsk, which found something it didn't like when the boot sequence was attempting to mount the drives.
