Which operating system do you have?

Built-in Windows Defender on Windows 10 is a good antivirus to be running full time for protection. Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7. Bitdefender is what I use currently on my Win 7 computer.

Superantispyware is a very old and largely out of date program and hasn't been recommended for ages.

Malwarebytes is one of the best especially if it's the paid version which runs full time to work alongside your antivirus program. I use the free version to scan my computer once/week.

I use CCleaner for general maintenance and cleaning out temp files and other useless things not needed on my computer.

I wouldn't use any registry cleaners. They can cause more problems than they're worth.

If you have a disc hard drive then Defraggler is a good defragmentation program although Windows own does the job if it's currently active. If you have a SSD defragging is not needed.

wonder if windows defender is running automatically
It is active by default unless you or another program has stopped it. Usually installing a third party a/v will shut it off (not Malwarebytes though)

To see if Defender is active
Open Task Manager and click on Details tab. Scroll down and look for MsMpEng.exe and the stats column will show if it's running.

Just to be clear the firewall is not the same program as the anti-virus. They should both be on and running.

Do read and follow the instructions in the above link...

How to turn on Windows Defender
    https://www.itpro.co.uk/desktop-soft...ndows-defender

Did you ever install another antivirus on that computer?

Ok, then with AVG installed Windows antivirus is and should be off. The notification above takes AVG into account as your a/v protection.
