[RESOLVED] Hide a program icon on desktop
Hi: Have a program icon on my desktop that I'd like to hide. Want the program to run in background, but just wat to hide its desktop icon. Know how to hide/recover all icons, but just want to hide one. Please step, or refer t a utility that can get the job done. Much thanks, Jim1

What would be the purpose of hiding the icon? If it is hidden, you won't be able to see it or click on it, so it won't be much use. An easier method would be to simply delete the icon from the Desktop. The program would still be available to run using other methods. Or, you could just move the icon to an area outside the visible Desktop area. You could also create a different user account that has the icon on the Desktop, and remove it from the regular user account Desktop. More information on what exactly you want to achieve would be helpful.

Did this: Windows key > Right click desktop icon to be hidden (running program) > Properties > Select General > Check Hidden
Desktop icon turned gray, but remained visible on desktop. Is there a remedy or new routine to hide the selected desktop icon, remembering that the program it represents is running in the background.

I would just install the program, then remove the icon from the desktop and from the Start menu. It would still be visible in Task Manager unless you used Group Policy to start it under a different Admin user account.

Why do you need a desktop shortcut at all? You don't need a desktop shortcut in order to run the app.

I am assuming that you have the program set to run at startup. If that is the case, as Midknyte says, you do not need a desktop icon at all, or a Start Menu entry. Just delete them. Let us know if you have an issue or problem with this. There is no reason to have a hidden desktop icon, as it is not useful for anything.

I'm doing daily backups for a friend, and others have access to his computer. I don't want them to mess around with the desktop icon, since it is running in the background, and can do the backup without interference. If the other users can't see the backup icon, they can't mess things up.

Drag and drop the unwanted icon into the recycle bin.

Fink! That did the job. Then I deleted from the Recycle bin. Can I get it back on the desktop, if needed for some reason,. even an odd reason? No problem running from the Start menu, either. Thanks.

Can I get it back on the desktop
Dragging it from the start menu to the desktop will create a new shortcut to run the program.

Thanks. I was trying to reinvent the wheel in solving the problem. Thanks to all. There are good reasons, at times, to hiding the program icons, or just one. Jim1

BTW, you can also create shortcuts from the start menu (all programs) by right clicking the program & selecting-
send to > desktop (create shortcut).
