I uninstalled all skype programs using Revo Uninstaller. I reinstalled skype version 7.40.0.104. I assume that is the classic desktop version that I needed. After installation, it took me to the same upgrade screen without allowing me to bypass this screen to allow me to log into skype. So, I clicked on upgrade to see if it would allow me to log in. A pop-up message appeared that said download of the skype update failed. Then, it said click here to go online and download the update manually. It too me to a webpage (which is below). The webpage could not be accessed.

Does that mean I won't be able to keep all my contacts and conversation logs? Is there a version that would allow me to keep these? Which version should I install?

If you have not already exported your data, you may be out of luck unless you can extract the data from the Desktop version 7 files. I would backup those files to a place that Microsoft does not have access to before "upgrading" to version 8, just in case. If you are lucky, the version 8 "upgrade" will see those files and allow you to access them. You don't really have a choice of versions - version 7 will no longer connect to Microsoft's servers.

Note:
If the "upgrade" to version 8 works, your Contacts and Conversations will not longer be stored on your computer, they will be on Microsoft's computers.

JDC2000, I did save my skype folders containing my data from version 7. I just installed version 8 and all my contacts and conversation logs are there. I didn't have to export them from version 7. I appreciate the time you took to help me. Thanks again, JDC.

If you still have the ability to Export your Contacts and Conversations, I would do so now to a format that can be accessed without using Skype, just in case. This capability may no longer exist however, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

Would that be main.db file that I would use? How would I do that? There are 2 folders in Appdata/roaming. One called skype and other called skye_old. The skype_old has the main.db file.

You could make backup copies of those files, but you should also try an Export if it is still possible. That would get you a .csv file that can be used by other programs and applications, and is readable by you.

JDC2000, I found where in my account to export my contacts to a csv file. I wasn't aware that this could be done. Thanks again for the help.
