Thanks for getting back to me.
Last night, the computer seemed to be a lot worse, just freezing all the time. It seems to be better today i.e. no megafreeze for 10 or 15 minutes, although when watching TV on it, from time to time I'm getting pauses while it buffers, which I don't think I should really be getting when I've got a 100 Mbps connection(?)
I've just been into the MS VWMA to enable it again but I was surprised to find that it was still enabled, so I don't understand that. But anyway the connection to the router is via a cable.

At this point we still don't know whether you have a hardware or software issue. To eliminate software as the cause, you could try creating a live Linux boot disc or flash drive and try running the computer using that. If the freezing stops, you have a software issue. If it continues, hardware would be the cause.

Ok, thanks. But my first reaction on reading your post is 'sounds a bit too technical for me'. But I'll check out the links you've given me and see what I can do. Thanks.

I looked at the linuxmint links but it seems that the download is 2GB, which is too big for a CD and needs a DVD, which I don't have. If I did download to a DVD and used it to boot up would that mean that for that session the computer would bypass the Windows OS and instead run on Linux? To me as a novice it sounds as if this might cause conflicts with the Windows OS. Or would it just run for that session and then revert to the usual Windows OS next time I booted up without the Linux DVD in the drive? Or have I totally misunderstood what you're suggesting? Thanks.
