Computer just hangs
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, Service pack 1
Processor: AMD A4-5300 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 3.40GHz
RAM: 4GB, 64bit OS
The problem I'm having that sometimes, usually shortly after it's been switched on, the computer just hangs, and catch-up TV programmes just freeze frame. This can last for anything from 5 up to 15 minutes. Sometimes, as this is happening, the screen seems to be flickering about a 100 times a second and similarly the Google Chrome icon zips up and down the task bar about 100 times a second. The mouse is inoperable during this time. Then eventually, maybe after 5 or 15 minutes, the computer will start running normally and the TV programme will resume. Can anyone advise what the problem might be please?

Does the hard drive activity light stay on continuously when this happens?
Things to check:
Check Event Viewer for anything out of the ordinary.
Check the hard drive S.M.A.R.T. statistics for any signs of read errors. You could also run the hard drive manufacturer's disgnostics.
Check for malware with Malwarebytes free.

Thanks for that. Yes, the hard drive activity light does stay on continuously when it happens.
I already have the free version of AVG. Does that not remove malware?
I'm not too clued up on computers but I'll investigate your other suggestions. Thanks again.

Thanks jdc but I'll probably forego the malwarebytes suggestion after reading this article:

jdc, I checked out my hard drive and the diagnostics said it was ok.
Also, I used your link to look at the event viewer and I noticed that each day, in the minutes following my switching the computer on (usually when I've clicked on a link for catch-up TV) a certain error appears in the log which seems to coincide with the times when my computer's just frozen:
Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Dhcp-Client/Admin

That Malwarebytes conflict would be for the full (paid) version of the product. If you install the free version and do not activate the trial of the full version, you should have no trouble. It just means that you can't have 2 active antimalware products (from any provider) installed at the same time.
For the Event Viewer issue, open a Command Prompt and use the following command to create an ipconfig.txt text file of your IP address setup, then post the contents of the log file here.
Code:
ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt

Ah ok, I'll try the Malwarebytes. Also I'll create the text file and post it here. Thanks again.

The ipconfig.txt should tell us, but what kind of connection are you using for that computer, wired or wireless?
What router are you using? Did you restart the router?

I'm not sure but I think this is the file you wanted:

I've posted the ipconfig file that jdc asked me to get. I'm using a wired connection for my computer.
I'm using a Virgin Media router. I think it has been restarted once or twice since I first started getting this problem.

When exactly? DHCP errors could be a router problem. Did you try a different port or cable also?

The IP address info for the wired connection looks like it should work for your setup.

I restarted my router yesterday morning. It's not possible to use another port as it's not a USB connection; it's a special cable from the router to the computer.
