Chose what happens when I close the lid

The machine is an HP Pavilion DV6.

Under Power Options, I have 'Chose what happens when I close the lid' set to Sleep and it used to work but now it isn't. I know that from the sound coming from the machine, it used to go quiet but now nothing changes, I can still hear the disk and the fan spinning.

Anyone know why and how I can get that setting working again?

    Thanks - rev

First see if it's a hardware problem with the switch that gets depressed when you close the lid. Leave the lid up and push the pin near the hinges down manually a few times and see what happens. You may need to use a paperclip depending on the laptop. It's possible that the switch is either dirty or broken. Has happened to me.

Try switching the "What happens when you close the lid" option to shutdown. If it still does nothing then that's further evidence of a broken/dirty switch.

I might be a moron but I can't find a switch! I know nothing is depressing the main on/off button because the screen goes off before the lid is fully closed. Could it be deactivated by some other method?

Usually it's a tiny button or hole near a hinge at the back of the laptop. Some newer slimline notebooks/laptops may have a switch hooked up internally to the hinge workings and others use magnets.

Try the second thing I suggested and switch the function to shutdown to see what happens.

I think there's a sensor in the hinge. According to this link, it's possible that the cable needs be reseated or replaced.

    Will do.

Good link, I got the Service Manual from it and I'll consider giving it a shot as a last resort (I can never get all those little screws back where they went

Edit: The switch does appear to be internal and starts working (if it is working) at a lid angle of about 45 degrees.

I usually lay out a sheet of egg crate foam, and then I place each screw I remove onto the foam, mirroring the layout of the laptop. Or you could use a sheet of paper and some tape. Whatever you have. That way you know where each screw came from.

Good idea. I'm usually impatient and reckless with hardware issues.

BTW: Hardware did turn out to be the problem for the user in your link.

I've worked on a couple HP's where I had to Reseat the Cable.
Seems to be a somewhat common problem on HP Laptops.

HP's also seem to have more Screws holding them together than other Brands I've worked on.
I compare them to working on a General Motors Vehicle (HP) and a Ford or Chrysler (Other Brand Laptops).
The GM's always use more screws to hold on the same part!

I changed the setting to OFF when closed, rebooted and OFF worked. So I changed it back again on the grounds that the cable is probably ok. It went back to sleeping when the lid was closed. Solved with no explanation...
