Question ACER Aspire 8935g CPU upgrade (Dual or Quad?)

    Hi,

I've been given an old Acer Aspire 8935g laptop (the real monster 18.4" screen) to fix and upgrade.

I've replaced the graphics card which was dead, but I've been asked to make the machine as fast as I can.
Now bearing in mind that if any games are played on this they will old games (probably very old) most of the time it will be used for office work, web browsing, movie playing and maybe some very light (and occasional) movie encoding.

Having done some research, it seems that the fastest processors that will work in this machine (with any certainty) are the T9900 @ 3.06GHz and the Q9100 @ 2.26 GHz.

So, which is likely to be fastest one to use?

I don't want to have to change it more than once as you have to totally dismantle the entire machine to get to it.

What are your thoughts on this please?
    Cheers!

What CPU does it have now? There were several versions of the 8935G.

Before you do a CPU upgrade, have you upgraded the HD to an SSD? That would make a huge difference.

For most tasks the T9900 would probably be faster, even though it only has 3 cores versus the 4 on the Q9100. The Q9100 has 4 cores and twice the cache, but runs slower. If you are doing something that can use 4 cores, the Q9100 might be faster, otherwise the T9900 at 3.06 GHz would probably be faster.

It currently has an Intel T6600 @ 2.2GHz so quite slow.
Also, yes, it will have an SSD fitted since it has space for 2 drives.

An SSD for the OS will really help with the speed, especially considering the 5400 rpm hard drive it had originally. If it has room for 2 hard drives, get an SSD for the boot drive and a magnetic drive for storage.

I'd agree with jdc2000. Going from the T6600 to the Q9100 is basically adding 2 more cores of the same clock speed. That might help if you are running multiple apps at the same time, or apps that can use multiple cores.

Going to the T9900 is about a 50% cpu clock improvement, so that would help with individual apps or apps that are single core.

Ok, well I'm glad I asked.
I was leaning towards the Quad but I'll go with the T9900 since it seems to be the most popular option.
    Thanks for the help.
    Cheers!
