I'm not sure I agree with you there because it has to go into before it can fail to come out of Sleep Mode.
No, booting is the complete process from initializing the BIOS (POST) all the way into starting the OS. If the system was in Sleep Mode, it doesn't "boot" when you try to power it on again.

OK got it.
I think the Sleep setting was the problem. After I set sleep to Never, the machine hasn't misbehaved, it seems to boot up OK and it stayed up all day.
I got the idea that something else might be going on when the display went black but the machine still appeared to be doing a backup.
