Windows Update
I am having a similar problem. There is an icon on the left bottom of the tray which says ( Windows is downloading updates 40% complete ), it has remained like this for over a week.
Don't really care about the updates, but my laptop seems to be running much slower than before.
I have done the following... Ran Norton Antivirus and MBAM nothing found,
Downloaded and ran the WindowsUpdate.diacab , it just keeps running wit no end result.
Ran SFC /scannow , It completes with the message.. Windows resources protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Tried to open the log file but got an access denied.
I have read the previous post about waiting for MS to come out with a fix. So I guess we will hove to wait or is there any thing else I can try

Tried to open the log file but got an access denied.
Post the path to the log fille and the log file name that you were trying to access. I assume that you are logged in to an Administrator level account.

Are you talking about the CBS.log? You can't open like a normal log file.

Did you try running SFC from Safe Mode?

You need to verify that your AV supports the Spectre/Meltdown update before the January Windows Updates will install.

Ran the SFC in Safe Mode, it found and corrected some errors.
Problem is resolved
