sound issues .. codec or other fix
My PC can play 5.1 from my dvd's even though my sound card is set for stereo only.. yet If I attempt to play an mp4 file with 6.1 audio I get no sound .. I'm looking to remedy this situation.. all I want to do is I have many mp4 video files that play back but the files in 6.1 audio do not play back.. I have a few audio programs but am looking for a program I can use for right clicking the offended mp4 6.1 and changing the audio to stereo . .is there such a feature ? I'm sure there is but need some guidance to find (interenet) and use to change .
does codec fix this or the properties of my sound card..?

What video player are you using? VLC handles pretty much anything I throw at it.

If it still doesn't play in VLC, I don't think it's a codec issue. Like I said, VLC plays just about everything.
You can try limiting VLC to Stereo/Mono:
