No start after 12/14 MS Update

If this is in the wrong place, please move it.

Yesterday there were 2 updates for Win 7,

    KB4054518
    KB 890830

I think those were the ones, because Updates is noodging me now to install them.

(There's an update almost daily, really annoying.) This morning my machine wouldn't start, but I had no previous problems.

It ran System Repair, but repair failed. Then I ran System Restore back to 3 different dates. Each failed. The last one,
    12/14 at 12:18 AM,
said it was failing, so I plugged in my external HD with an older image, but then the Sys Rest worked. Duh?

Just ran an A-V scan, found nothing, MBAM nothing

I'm not D/L any more updates till this is resolved. And of course I'm making an updated exterior image today.

Did you get an error message or BSOD when trying to start with the updates installed? If so, what was it?

KB890830 is an update for the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
KB4054518 is the monthly "security" (and other less useful and possible unwanted) software updates

I have not seen any reports of boot failures after installing these, so any error numbers or info that you got would be helpful.

No BSOD, just the DOS screen, saying W couldn't start normally. I switched it to System Repair, which I've never used before. That gave me 0x0 problems in each step, except:

    Systemdisk=Device\Harddisk 0
    Win. directory =E\Windows (I have no E)
    Auto check=0
    Number of root causes=1

System repair said it couldn't fix the problem, and I to Sys Restore. That failed 3 times with 3 older ones, saying it couldn't copy the files. Only the one from midnight worked.

I've just checked a few other forums, and no one's complaining about yesterday's updates. Or were they Tuesday updates

I can't find any other cause for this. I didn't do anything with the system yesterday.
