    Text file problem

    I have Win 8.1
I composed a text file using Notepad and saved it to a folder.
When I try to open it I get an 'Access Denied' message.
I've tried opening it as an Administrator but still no luck and the same message.
Other text files in the same folder all open ok.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

It would help if we knew what folder you saved the file into and exactly what you named it.

You could try taking ownership of the file:

    Thanks for the reply.
The folder is one that I created myself for storing miscellaneous files and is on the desktop. The text file in question is one I created in Notepad and saved with a 'txt' suffix.
I tried taking ownership of the file as per your link but the process won't let me past adding the Object name. (my windows user name) and says no such name found.
All other files (a mixture of types) in the folder open ok.

You could try enabling the hidden Administrator account and then log into that account. Then, see which User account Windows thinks owns that file. See if you can add read/write permissions to that file for other users.

If all else fails, just open the file, copy the contents to a new Notepad window and re-save with a different name. Then see if you can delete the old file and re-name the file to something else.

Note: When you log in as the Administrator, you will have to use Windows Explorer to locate the file in the Desktop folder of the user account where it is saved.

    C:\Users\<UserName>\Desktop

I noted that under the file's 'Properties' there is no sign of 'Owner'. All the other text files have an owner listed. (me)
Maybe the 'owner' bit got corrupted when I compiled the file so now it doesn't recognise anyone?
I can't copy the contents to a new Notepad window as access is denied to the file. Also unsuccessful at 'taking ownership'.
Appreciate the help and further suggestions but it's getting a bit complicated for me! The other files (and new test ones) seem to open ok so I might just delete the file...if I can.

You might have to use the Take Ownership steps on the folder on the Desktop that the files are in and select Propagate to files and subfolders option to fix this. Before you do that, you should COPY the other files in that folder to a backup location in another folder.
