I knew about the Dec rollup. You're saying that the January Rollup is also wonky? If so, you should have said so. I thought there was something wrong in my computer

According to Microsoft, if you get that error code when trying to install an update, the following links might be useful:

I used the MS Troubleshooter, and I've made some progress. The January installed but the Feb didn't. I'll run the sfc in Safe-Mode again, and drop this for a while.

I'm done with this, and I'm worn out by 25 years of Microsoft's garbage, and I have assorted other words for them and their machines that can't be used on this forum. If I get a virus, I'll wipe my drive and install my HD clone.

I made one more try last night after I was less ticked off.

I installed KB4074587, dated 2/13, last night, Win wouldn't start today, had to do a sys restore. This has been going on since Dec, and it's all tangled up in my brain. I need some clarification, as I've gotten no online work done, the kind that brings in $, in 2 days.

1--I know some of those updates are supposed to fix the MeltDown/Spectre thing. Are my updates not installing because of the MeltDown/Spectre thing, or is it the other way around? Or is it a diff problem in Win messing with the updates?

2--Belarc shows only these installed since Sept:

    KB4040980 on 9/15/2017 (details...)

no verification data KB4048957 on 11/17/2017 (November 14,
    2017—KB4048957 (Monthly Rollup)Applies to: Windows Server 2008 R2 indows 7 Service Pack 1)

no verification data KB4054998 on 1/10/201 (Security and Quality
    Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1 for Windows 7 SP1 and Server 2008 R2 SP1)

3--Elsewhere I found instructions to post CB logs from Win, attached.

4--If the Feb update is defective, I'll just wait till MS re-re-re-repairs it.

I have a 550KB attachment of CBlogs, they won't attach. I'll get back to it.

If the KB4074587 update was the only one that you installed, and you had to do a System Restore, then it is most likely that Microsoft still has not gotten this update right. One of my systems also required a System restore after I installed 2 updates, KB4074587 may have been one of those.

I would not be too concerned about the Spectre-Meltdown updates as yet, since stable updates are not yet available for all systems, and because researchers are still finding additional ways to exploit the vulnerabilities, so additional patches will be still be needed in the future. This does not mean that you not vulnerable to the Spectre-Meltdown exploits, however. Everyone is until all possible attack vectors have been discovered and patched. As always, staying away from web sites that might host malware that can take advantage of the vulnerabilities is the key.

I am not sure how valuable the log files would be. They can be split into parts for posting here, but you may want to post just the most recent section of data that will fit first.

You can wait to see if the March Update Rollup will install.

An alternative option that you might want to look into testing is Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop:

Is there anything effective and simple to fix this? My computer that had Windows 7 installed when i bought it 5 years ago is now throwing me that error 10 times a day. It is annoying but I am wondering when it will decide NOT to open anymore since it thinks it is not a genuine version.

What error are you referring to? Post the complete error message (or a screen capture of it).

On the bottom part of the desktop it says:

    Windows 7
    Build 7601
This copy of Windows is not genuine

Often, I get a popup in the corner asking me to activate my key (i didn't get a screenshot of that one so i don't have the exact wording)

Then I get a popup saying:

Optional update delivery is not working

You may be a victim of software counterfeiting.
To use all Microsoft windows features, such as all
    updates from Windows Update, get the latest updates;
and receive product support, your copy of Microsoft
Windows must be validated as genuine

And i also "lost" my desktop as it is only black now.
I rebooted my computer today, thinking it would go away, but it didn't

We don't have the same problem. Please start yours on a separate thread.
