[UPDATED] Windows update broken for most Win 7 users.

Windows update broken by Microsoft's latest cumulative update....

Microsoft forgot to change an expiration date, and now all attempts to run Windows Update in Win7 are failing with the bogus message “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running.
    https://www.computerworld.com/articl...-80248015.html

There are some suggested temp fixes but it may be best to just wait until Microsoft issues a hotfix to solve the problem.

Update: Microsoft appears to have fixed the issue server-side although some Win 7 users are still reporting
    problems.

the bad value <ExpiryDate> updates itself when you check for Windows updates.

I haven't been able to install the Dec or the Jan updates. I don't know if it's related to that error.

I skipped the Dec, hid it, but got concerned about the 2nd one. I was getting this error: "WindowsUpdate_80073712"
I ran the MS Update Tshooter, and everything checked out, it said all issues were fixed, including that one, but then the summary at the end said this:
    Attachment 14573
    Update still won't install.

It can't be both fixed and not fixed (Schrodinger's Cat?)

I've tried running sfc/ scannow, but I get just a list of DOS programs, not the actual scan

That is due to a typo in the command. The space and slash are transposed.

    correct format:

    Code:
    sfc /scannow
The space goes after the "sfc", followed by the "/scannow" switch.

It took only a few seconds, so it can't be complete, can it?

The Dec and Jan updates are still sitting in the systray. I don't know what to do.

Are these the rollups, or do any have KB numbers? Post a screen capture of the Updates list.

Both rollups. I temporarily hid the Dec one, and now I can't get it back. That one was withdrawn, wasn't it?

    The Jan is still there:
2018-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4056894)

    Download size: 231.4 MB
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

This is ironic. MS has bugs in its software, so it sends out fixes, but the fixes don't work. They'll send another fix to fix the fix.

Monthly rollups are CUMULATIVE. If you're installing the January rollup, you don't need to install the December one.

OK, but the Jan one isn't installing.

1--MS Security Essentials isn't listed in the Google Doc. And the only Google product I have is Chrome. My CPU is Intel Pentium G620.

Most of the rest is gibberish to me. What am I supposed to do?

    2-- why isn't my sfc /scannow completing?
