    Odd Browser issue (?)

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question or not...I have a desktop PC (Windows 10) that I use for general internet browsing and playing my CD collection. I have been using Chrome for the past coupe of years, but have noticed some display and slowdown issues lately, so I switched to Firefox (which I had used in the past). The problem stems with the CD playback. I noticed immediately that my CD's would not play correctly. The volume level would change or disappear altogether for brief segments. I was using Windows Media Player and switched to VLC with only a slight improvement. When I switched back to Chrome, all of these issues disappeared. Any ideas on what may be the issue and how it can be solved? I was really enjoying the browsing improvement I experienced with Firefox on both my desktop and laptop PC's and really didn't want to revert back to Chrome.

More info on this issue is needed. Exactly when does the volume issue on the CD playback occur? If you only have Windows Media Player or VLC running and playing a CD, (after a clean boot), do you experience the issue, or does it only occur if you are playing a CD and using the browser (Firefox)?

I just open the browser and put a CD in. It usually automatically starts with WMP. When I switched to Firefox, the procedure is exactly the same, but as the CD plays, the volume fluctuates and at times drops out completely. Switch back to Chrome and the CD's play perfectly.

A web browser should not be needed, or used, to play a CD.

What happens if you put a music CD in the drive and close the drawer? Doesn't your default music player program start? Do you get a message asking what program you want to use?

What happens if your insert a CD and, using VLC, select Open Disc?

That is really bizarre. The CD audio should be complete independent of the browser. Which version of Firefox are you using?

I prefer AIMP for audio. There is even a portable version if you want to try it out first.

I don't use the browser to listen to music. I use it to access the internet while I'm listening to my CD's. I had zero problems until I switched from Chrome to Firefox. I guess I could just switch back, but I had been experiencing some slowdown with Chrome, and some sites were actually not displaying correctly.

    I am using Firefox 57.0

Have you verified that the music plays OK when you do not have a web browser open?

If yes, then it sounds like Firefox is your issue. Version 57 of Firefox moved to a different program base which is supposed to be "faster and better". However, as with most software these days, you are the beta tester. It sounds like it is actually "slower and more of a resource hog" instead. You may want to consider using the ESR version of Firefox, which is still using the old code base. See the links below:

Yes, the CD's play just fine without any browser open. The only problem is when I have Firefox open. Anyway, I appreciate all the responses. I just wondered if this was a known issue, or if I was the only person experiencing this problem.

I haven't heard of a cd audio issue, but there may be something related on bugzilla.
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist...cksearch=audio

FF57.0.1 is up on the Mozilla FTP site. There are no release notes yet, but the update should be getting pushed out soon.

Note that you can't easily rollback to Firefox ESR from FF57. You can try, but no promises.
