Word 2016 update to v15.40 file saving issue

My MS Office package just installed this update and now every time I try to save on a Word .docx format I get prompted about saving it in the .dotm format which I don't want to do. The previous version NEVER did this and its really annoying. When I've done searches, none of the sites mention this version of Word, so I can't figure out where the options are to stop it from occurring. Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks.

You have to admire the way Microsoft tests those updates.

Thanks..having been a PC user for years I made the switch to an iMac months ago, so the problem is with Office for Mac. Not sure if anyone here is Mac though. I posted a question on a MS Office forum for Mac so hopefully I'll get an answer..it's extremely annoying. Every time I open Word a bunch of windows pop up alerting me to some kind of changes to global formats that I never made. UGH!

so the problem is with Office for Mac.
    That is useful information.

Every time I open Word a bunch of windows pop up alerting me to some kind of changes to global formats that I never made.
    Also useful.

A screen capture of the error message(s) would also be useful.

Unfortunately neither of the links is helpful in this case. I posted a thread in the Apple communities so with luck, I'll find the solution

I just opened Word and immediately got a warning which I've attached a screen shot titled Opening Word. Then when I close it I get two more which are named Closing Word. See the attachments

The first error message is indicating that the Normal.dotm file has a problem. It is either missing (cannot be found in the appropriate location by Word), damaged, or you do not have access rights to it.

The second and third messages are simply a warning that Word will replace the Normal.dotm file if you click Yes and Save.

I assume that you are clicking on the Yes and Save buttons when exiting Word. If you get the same messages the next time you start Word, it means that Word was unable to recreate and save the Normal.dotm template file.

Have you been able to locate the Normal.dotm file? What happens if you move (not copy) it to another location?

When I open Word and get the first message I click "OK", but the other two I click "Don't Save" So are you saying I should be clicking Save instead?

How this all began was after updating Office to v 15.40, I opened a .docx file from my desktop, worked on it and when I went to close it, a global template window opened which I'd never seen before and still not sure why it opened in the first place. I don't remember what I did but from what I see here it appears I may have created a Normal.dotm template without knowing it. I've only been using Mac for a few months so I'm not sure how to get to the directory for template files, etc. All I want to be able to do is save in .docx since I have no clue what global templates are nor am I interested. Hope that helps

Click Yes on the "Do you want to Replace" message, and Save on the "Do you want to Save" message.
See if that fixes the problem.

Tried it and it keeps doing the 'changes have been made to the normal.dotm template' thing. The MS tech sent me instructions from another forum about how to roll back to a previous version using Time Machine, but that requires having set it up with an external HD which I never had since I don't own one. There's got to be a way to remove the global template macro though, I'm sure.

The Normal.dotm is the template file.

Were you able to locate it?

What happens when you move it to a different location, or rename it to xNormal.dotm?
