Did you check the volume control to make sure the level is not at 0 or muted?

    Any Microsoft updates applied recently?

Speakers/headphone plugged in securely? Are they working on another system?

Is this the system in your signature?

on the sound control panel it all looked ok nothing muted

I have a line from the computor headphone socket into a small music centre so I can
record onto the oldfashioned audio cassettes

so I listen to internet radio etc through the speakers of this small sony music centre

I ve had no probs with sound for 6 months or so then suddenly .... zero sound

Now you mention it microsoft did do an update yesterday but Ive had sound since then

At this point, we don't know if you have a hardware or a software problem. To try to eliminate a hardware issue, you could try one of two things:

    1. Boot a live Linux CD and see if you have sound.

    2. Enable sound in Safe Mode in Windows and see if you have sound.

Did you try just plugging in some headphones? If the headphones work, then it's probably an issue with your Sony thing.

If the headphones don't work, are you sure the correct playback device is selected?

Have you changed anything else recently?
