    What am i

I have a tp-link wireless access point and I want to use it to pick up a signal from the next door house.
When configuring it, do I choose AP mode, Client mode or what?

    Thanks - rev

    Model number?

Assuming you have permission from the next door house, you'd use probably use Client mode. Clients connect to APs.

Thsnks, what's confusing is my tp-link is described, called, a wireless access point. So how can I be an access point and a client?
The client mode requires two units, send and receive so I chose 'bridge with access point' for the config and I was able to see the neighbors network,2 bars. My laptop will get me 2bars so I need to change the beam width or whatever you call it.
I've heard that a wide span doesn't reach as far and you can narrow it (somehow) for greater range - can you confirm? How is it done?
    Thanks!

Yes, the narrower the beam the further it can reach.
    EXAMPLE: using a reflector on a tp-link

Or replace your antennas with higher dB antennas, what I did for son-in-law.

I thought there was a parameter in the config page that allows you to specify a narrower beam?
I didn't notice it this time but it may called something else, like Distance.

A Wireless bridge is basically acting like a middleman, like a repeater. You didn't give us the model number or the list of options.

I've never seen such a thing. To change the beam, it would either mean replacing the antenna or doing something like that beer can trick.

That is the only legal way to do it.

Antenna theory, , when you add 3dB you double the power.
Examples: Scroll and look at the options available.

This is what I would try first.

I found the distance setting in the configuration page, its called 'Distance Setting'
I got the unit up higher and used the antenna optimizer utility and it all works.
    Thanks to all!

Those settings are most unusual. Never have seen them before myself.

From what I saw, that affects the ACK timeout, not the actual beam.
