Resolved [RESOLVED] installation continues on from Vista to XP

carried over from the Vista Forum:

So windows XP Sp 2 is installed .. and up/running . from a formatted HP Pavilion entertainment laptop .. BUT apart from nothing in this new O/S program like drivers and browsers etc .. its time to set up the laptop..

first up- we know that IE and even Chrome won't support XP anymore but Firefox Mozilla will (so far) .. Trouble I have first up-- into first step is:
MSN is recognized as the web browser ( thru IE 6 ) and I can even cruise through the links and story's of today's news .. But no matter what other internet address I type in to the search bar I get no internet connection even though the laptop is showing a connection and good 300 mbps speed . so after looking into all the areas in the control panel /internet connections I am running a sfc /scannow with disc in the cdrom to pull what missing drivers I need ..... After I get the browser problems fixed I can get onto finding and installing al lthe drivers I need for the graphics/sound cards ..

sp 3 installed ... still no internet except Bing.com ( and I don't think it is cache becauase of the multitude of links they can open on will ., running some diagnostic checks found this:

Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS or FTP . this is probably caused by firewall settings on this PC .. ( no kidding) Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port 80 HTTPS port 443 and FTP port 21 .

Over to youtube to further investigate this .

still connection ( because of firewall port 80 ?).,, through cmd and using ipconfig /all shows my Ip connection .. connection is up but only have limited connection to MSN or Bing .,
then using cmd / ipconfig / release no connection , then ipconfig /renew settings all back up again .. I go into control panel internet adapters no errors says all is good ..

called my IP service provider and the male operator says he wasn't familiar with this .. (end call ) .. will call again later for hopefully another more experienced operator .

back to firewall to - add port-- says HTTPS box is checked in the details box is name_ blank under that the port 80 is there but what should 'Name' Be??

    over .... (with thanks)

    found this .. :
Symptom: Port 80 Is Blocked On A Windows XP PC. Various browsers all produce failures appearing because http is blocked IE port 80. Alternate ports like HTTPS over 443 may work just fine. Other traffic besides port 80 may also be blocked like ICMP (ping) or SSH on port 22.

This blocking behavior is usually due to a firewall being installed and activated. First check the Windows XP firewall and disable that. Look in the control panel, Windows Firewall icon. If this firewall is disabled check for other software based firewalls installed like Zone Alarm or products from Mcafee and Symantec like Norton or other personal firewall products.

In other cases we've seen port 80 blocked on Windows XP where no firewall seems to exist. In the case i'm thinking of it was a Cisco VPN client that was the problem. The Cisco VPN client has a Zone Alarm firewall. Sometimes even after the Cisco VPN client is uninstalled port 80 is still blocked and a user cannot use a browser to http but can use https. In this case try the following solution.

Restart the Windows XP PC in Safe Mode.
Run Regedit.exe to open the registry editor.
    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsdatant
Click start in the right pane and modify the value to 3.
Restart the PC and port 80 should no longer be blocked and you can use http with any browser.

Ill post back if it works ..

    oh oh ..
    their web site reports:
Known issues when downgrading from Vista or Windows 7 to XP
If you have an HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario consumer notebook computer that shipped with Windows 7 or Vista, changing the operating system (OS) will cause severe operational problems. Many of the components, such as sound, video, graphics, network connectivity, drives, or other devices and peripherals, may have limited functionality, or may not work at all. You should research the support policies for your hardware, and review the problems experienced by other users, before you consider changing the operating system.
